Public input is vital to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process. Comments from members of the community and regulatory agencies about the proposed project are useful in identifying alternatives that should be explored and evaluated, and those that may be eliminated, as well as identifying key environmental issues that should be studied in the EIS. As part of the preparation of the Tier 2 EIS, two scoping meetings were held, one public scoping meeting and one governmental and agency scoping meeting.
The Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare the Tier 2 EIS for the construction and operation of inaugural airport facilities for the South Suburban Airport (SSA) was published on October 28, 2003. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted one agency scoping meeting and one public scoping meeting on December 3, 2003. Both meetings were held at Governors State University, Engbretson Hall, in University Park, Illinois. The meetings were held in conjunction with an informational workshop that included a slide and poster board presentation of the proposed project and the EIS process. Written comments were accepted until December 19, 2003. All comments received during scoping are part of the official EIS record, and will be considered during the preparation of the Draft EIS. Public input will again be sought and a Public Hearing held once the Draft EIS has been completed.
